Curious about the LG washer and dryer? LG is the only brand that packs the cleaning power of a full-sized (27-inch) laundry into smaller spaces. Its rich product catalog is remarkable.

However, having so many choices can cause concern: How do you know which is the best LG washer and dryer pair for you? The stackable front load or the old school top load washer? How about the dryer? Do you need the vented or the ventless dryer?

I'm the founder of Designer Appliances, a premier appliance store in New Jersey, and I have 15+ years of experience. I've test-driven these LG washers (and their predecessors), and sat through countless hours of training. Most importantly, I've heard real-life feedback from our customers in real time. Pros: Reasons To Buy LG Washer and Dryer

  • Full-size laundry for smaller spaces. LG is the only manufacturer that addresses this problem. When you have limited depth and need a big (i.e. 27-inch or wider) washer with a vented dryer, consider LG's 30-inch-deep models.
  • Offers both compact selection as well as all-in-one combos. LG has a large selection of 24-inch wide laundry for urban apartments. The brand even features all-in-one machines that wash and dry in one fell swoop, plus ventless dryers.
  • Stackable washer and dryer models offer convenience. The formation saves space and saves you from bending down. LG stackable washers and dryers are quiet and stable when spinning.
  • Tired of fighting mold? Choose one of the capable LG top load washers. LG has a broad product selection with many different price points.
  • Meaningful innovation. Innovative solutions like the LG WashTower upend the old-fashioned laundry center (small capacity top load washer on the bottom; mini vented dryer on the top). LG features easy-to-reach controls, steam, and a modern look and color choices.
  • Amazing cleaning power. If you're looking for a washing machine with some of the best wash quality on the market, consider LG. Great selection of programs (i.e. temperature and detergent mix) combined with advanced drum choreography for gentle yet effective agitation to ensure clean clothes.

Cons: Reasons To Avoid LG Washer and Dryer

  • Prefer an old-fashioned agitator. Although LG makes agitator top load washers we prefer the gentle impeller top loaders from LG. You may want to check out Speed Queen washer for a great traditional agitator option.
  • No portable selection. You live in a dorm room or an apartment without laundry hookups. Consider getting a portable washing machine instead. Unfortunately, LG doesn't offer any portable laundry solutions at this time.

Washer and Dryer 101: What to Look For

Before you buy an LG washer and dryer, you need to be aware of a few key considerations you should factor into your decision. They include things like design, configuration, size/capacity, and wash and dry performance, among others. Here, we've broken down each to help you shop smarter.

Do I want a Front Load or Top Load Washer?

Your first decision: Front load vs top load washers. The type you pick will ultimately depend on your personal preference and your laundry room's configuration. If you want a stacked set, a front load washer's the clear choice. If you like your old top loader, you might want to stick with a similar model.

A top load washer is easy to load and unload without bending down too low. It allows you to add a forgotten sock midcycle without hitting pause. And it gives you the deep soaking clean you might want to see. The only downside? They get a bad rap for being harsh on fabric, thanks to the traditional agitator at the center that rubs clothes to get them clean.

LG ranks high on our best-of lists because its top load washers actually are gentler on clothing and linens. Its products typically ace all product reviews since they're high efficiency (HE) impeller top loaders, which means that the washer uses drum motions to rub laundry items against each other instead of an agitator. That's much better for the fabric.

LG also incorporates the latest cleaning and steam technologies, which are usually reserved for front load washers, in its top load models.

Do I Want Stackable or Side by Side Machines?

There are lots of ways to install your washer and dryer, including side-by-side, side-by-side on pedestals, stacked, or two sets of stacked units set side by side. However, the configuration you choose will also depend on whether you opt for top load or front load machines.

If you have a top load washer and dryer, side by side is your only choice. If you pick a front load washer and dryer, you have a lot more flexibility.

What Type of Dryer Do I Need?

Although washers tend to have more exciting features than their matching dryers, you still have choices to make. When choosing a dryer, you need to know your fuel type and venting options: gas vs electric dryer and vented vs ventless.

Gas vs Electric
In order to install a gas dryer, you’ll need a gas hookup. Gas dryers use a fan and natural propane to heat and dry your laundry. Although these dryers are more difficult to install (you must have a gas line in your home running to your utility room or laundry area), they tend to dry your clothes faster and more efficiently. Gas dryers also have a longer lifespan than electric dryers.

LG WM1455HWA

Electric dryers, on the other hand, are easy to install and only require an electrical outlet to run. Electric dryers work by powering a fan that continuously pushes hot air into the machine. The electricity is also used to keep the clothes in motion as they dry. They're simpler to install, but you do need to determine whether you need a 110/120V or 220/240V outlet; 220/240V is standard, but some do run on 110/120V. These dryers don’t typically last as long as gas dryers.

Vented vs Ventless
Having a vented or ventless dryer depends on if you can vent outside from your laundry area. If you live in an apartment building, you’ll generally need a ventless dryer. Almost all 27-inch full-size dryers are vented, and most 24-inch compact models are ventless. LG makes both vented and ventless dryers. As we mentioned earlier, it also makes a ventless version of its popular WashTower.

What Size Washer Dryer Do I Need?

It’s crucial to measure the available space you have in your laundry room. Based on the thousands of customers we’ve helped over the years, we simply can’t emphasize this point enough.

We’ve seen so many people order a washer and dryer, wait patiently for them to arrive, and find that they don’t fit.

Most washers are usually 27 inches wide, but you’ll find that some brands add three to four inches for larger capacity. You should always allow for at least six inches of space behind the machine for connecting the water and power, and at least an inch in between the washer and dryer.

If you’re short on space, it might be a good idea to consider compact or stackable washers. Most stackable washers have a matching dryer and require only a simple stacking kit for installation. If you want to stack, make sure to double check the height of your laundry space.

Just like with washers, most full-size dryers are 27 inches wide, but larger capacities can mean that some models are two to three inches wider than the standard. However, it’s possible to find compact models that measure 24 inches or less. Measuring the height, width, and depth of the area for your dryer is critical, and you’ll also need to add on an extra inch to the side if next to a washer plus 6 inches of depth for door clearance and hookups.

Finally, check the door swing. Your space might require a right or left hinge. Not all washer and dryer doors have reversible hinges.

The LG washer and dryer catalog covers all popular sizes, from small, apartment size laundry (24 inch width, 25¼ inch depth, 33½ inch height) to full size (up to 29 5/18 inch width, 33¾ inch depth, 41¼ inch height).

Do They Wash and Dry Well?

More than any other factor, you’ll want to ensure your washer gets laundry cleans. (Of course.) It should offer enough cycles and options to cover all of your needs and potential wash situations. The same is true for the matching dryer.

For example, a steam feature is useful if you have allergies, as it helps to reduce dust, pollen, and other triggers. Manufacturers also emphasize that steam can penetrate fabrics to better eliminate dirt, odors, and wrinkles while using less water than a conventional wash setting. A quick wash setting can be really helpful for kids' clothes and sports uniforms.

Cleaning Performance
Overall, LG offers excellent cleaning performance thanks to its 6motion, steam, and TurboWash technologies. LG’s 6motion feature means it uses six wash motions to maximize washing performance. TurboWash gives you a shorter cycle without compromised cleaning performance. These unique features help to turn out cleaner clothes with every wash. The latest models from LG, called the FX washer and dryer pair, incorporate what the company dubbed Artificial Intelligence Direct Drive (AI DD), which is a series of advanced sensors for measuring out detergent and adjusting wash settings and time, as well as steam technology.

Drying Performance
LG’s drying performance is just as impressive. In addition to powerful drying capabilities for standard loads, you'll find unique drying cycles for specific situations. For example, with the TurboSteam feature, you can throw in your wrinkled shirt and have it looking smooth in less than 10 minutes. This feature also helps to refresh fabrics and reduce wrinkles in half the time of other steam settings.

Additionally, built-in moisture sensors help to detect the laundry’s dampness and shut off the machine when clothes are dry. This way, your clothes won’t get overdried (which can damage fabrics, especially stretchy ones) and you’ll save energy. Like its FX washer, the FX dryer has even more advanced sensors. This is an improvement over standard thermostats, which tend to make the dryer run longer. The extended tumble setting also helps to keep your clothes wrinkle-free by tumbling intermittently without heat.

How Loud Are They?

When searching for your ideal washer and dryer, look for quiet models. (You'll see in customer reviews if a particular model is known for being noisy.)

Historically, top-load washers have tended to be noisier than their front-load counterparts. However, this problem was solved with LG’s TrueBalance and TrueBalance Plus technologies. These features help to balance the top-load washers, reducing both vibration and noise.

Because they're quiet, you can put your washer or dryer anywhere in your home, even near frequently used living areas or bedrooms.

Do I Want Wi-Fi?

Many of us expect the gadgets we buy—including appliances—to keep pace with our busy. Wi-Fi connectivity is a huge piece of that pursuit. Fortunately, LG provides plenty of Wi-Fi-enabled washer and dryer options that can help make laundry day more flexible and convenient. Let's take a look at some of LG's flagship connectivity features:

NFC-Tag
NFC stands for Near Field Communication and is part of the magic behind “tap-and-go” services like Apple and Android Pay. LG's brought this NFC-Tag On technology to their appliances to help with diagnostics. To use the technology, simply download the app on a compatible smartphone and connect it directly to your machine. Then hold the phone near the tag-on symbol to diagnose any problems. You can even check the cycle progress or add brand new wash programs this way.

SmartThinQ
LG’s SmartThinQ app allows you to expand the limits of your laundry room and do your laundry on the go. The SmartThinQ technology lets you start and stop wash cycles remotely and receive helpful reminders about scheduled maintenance. This feature also diagnoses problems without ever needing to call an LG representative.

Thanks to voice-activation technology, which works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, you can manage your laundry with simple voice commands.

Smart Diagnosis
With the addition of Smart Diagnosis, you can solve problems with your appliances without calling an LG representative. The app can record and analyze the special tones emitted by Smart Diagnosis units and instantly provide the troubleshooting steps you need.

What About Energy and Water Efficiency?

At a minimum, your washer should meet all Energy Star requirements determined by the U.S. government. LG washers are rated as one of the top performers in Energy Star listings and guaranteed to save you money on utility costs. You'll also consume less water thanks to the integrated steam technology in LG washers.

Avoid Costly Mistakes

Consider this your checklist for a smooth installation day—and your safeguard against any future regrets. Before you buy:

  • Confirm all the measurements, both in your laundry space and in the hallways, doorways, and staircases leading to it. (It bears repeating, trust us.)
  • Confirm for sure whether you need a gas or electric dryer
  • Double check the hinge location
  • Be certain the model you're interested in has all the features you want
  • If buying online, consider calling to make sure it's in stock if the site says it's in stock

Conclusion

Overall, you can’t go wrong with an LG washer and dryer. They're some of the quietest, most dependable, and feature-rich sets on the market. We recommend LG washers and dryers due to their excellent quality, commitment to saving both energy and water, and highly modern approach to laundry design that's made to make your life easier. Whether you purchase a base model LG washer or dryer or spring for a premium one, your clothes will come out clean and fresh, guaranteed.

You also don't have to worry about missing out on modern conveniences, since every price tier offers something that will impress you daily. That being said, the higher you go in terms of price point, the more impressive features you'll have access to in your machine. It's all about deciding what works best for your budget, home, and unique laundry needs.
