Bosch dishwashers are reviewed for being quiet and reliable, but choosing between its six series (Ascenta, 100, 300, 500, 800, and Bosch Benchmark) is overwhelming.

I'm the founder of Designer Appliances, a premier appliance store in New Jersey, and have 15+ years of appliance experience. I confidently recommend Bosch to my customers, family, and friends. But when I do, I get the same question over and over. What's the best Bosch dishwasher?

I wrote this guide to make the 2023 Bosch lineup easier to digest (and selfishly to avoid repeating myself). I review each series, highlight its differences, and give my opinion on what features are worth upgrading for. In the end, you'll be able to pick out the Best Bosch dishwasher for you.

Is Bosch a match for you?

Pros: Reasons To Buy a Bosch Dishwasher

  • Ultra-quiet - Noise is a top concern for many dishwasher shoppers, and Bosch is the brand that started the race towards producing the quietest dishwashers over 20 years ago. At the top end of their dishwasher lineup Bosch is so quiet they need an indicator called InfoLight that shines on the floor to let you know when the cycle has finished.
  • Great wash performance - This is the one area where all Bosch dishwashers are the same. Bosch's wash system (PrecisionWash) is a carefully engineered combination of motors, pumps, sensors, filters, and spray arms, and it's part of every dishwasher in Bosch's lineup. While you'll pick up fancier specialty cycles on the high-end models, even the entry-level Bosch will do a great job cleaning your everyday loads thoroughly and efficiently.
  • Reliability - They're built to last. If properly maintained, a Bosch dishwasher can last for 10 years or more (the industry average is around 5-7).
  • Budget-friendly - Bosch offers dishwashers for every budget, starting at around $500 for their entry level Ascenta/100 series to around $2,300 for their luxury top-of-the-line Benchmark models.
  • Seamless design options - From hidden pocket handles to specialty cases—like panel-ready dishwashers with doors to match your kitchen cabinets, or a small, 18-inch dishwasher for a home bar—there's a Bosch model to suit your taste.

Cons: Reasons To Avoid a Bosch Dishwasher

  • Availability - Bosch dishwashers are the most sought-after products on the market. Be prepared to wait given the post-pandemic rush on home improvement. If you're planning a kitchen remodel, get in line now, but if your dishwasher just broke and you need a quick replacement, Bosch may not be the brand for you.
  • Upgrade worthy options get pricey - Bosch's enhanced drying options (AutoAir and CrystalDry) are game-changers. And the convenience of a 3rd rack cutlery tray is hard to beat. But these and other worthwhile upgrades will put you over $1,000.
  • No hard food disposer - Bosch utilizes filters to prevent bits of food from clogging your drain and getting into the pump. The system works well, but you'll need to clean the filter as it collects debris. Hard food disposers are a maintenance-free option found on some other brands, but they're loud and prone to breaking down.

Differences Between Bosch Dishwasher Series 100 vs 300 vs 500 vs 800

All Bosch dishwashers share the same motor and pump system. Meaning that you get you an excellent clean no matter which model you choose.

However, the tub material, drying technology, noise level, racking convenience, and WiFi get better as you go up on Series.

Not all of these distinguishing features will affect your satisfaction with the dishwasher. Here are the differences between the Bosch dishwasher series 100 vs 300 vs 500 vs 800.

1. The Bosch Ascenta and 100 Series Dishwasher

Bosch 100 Series Dishwasher Lineup
You'll like:

  • Ideal for those on a tight budget.
  • The renowned reliability that Bosch brings to the table.
You Might Not Like:

  • 48 - 50 decibels: a bit louder than we’d like. You’ll hear it running.
  • Plastic bottom with stainless steel walls.
  • 3rd rack available on select models.
  • Interior racks are not easily adjustable for large or odd size dishes.
Bosch SHXM4AY55N

The Best Budget Bosch Dishwasher: 100 Series SHXM4AY55N

I recommend the SHXM4AY55N as a formidable budget pick, although you can save an extra $200 with its sister product, SHEM3AY55N.

Here’s how I formed my opinion: The SHXM4AY55N cleans very well, has a third rack (and a silverware basket), and its noise level is acceptable in an open kitchen at 48 dB. It’s an ideal choice for a family.

The less expensive SHEM3AY55N, on the other hand, does not have a third rack and is noticeably louder at 50 dB (Each decibel (db) difference means around 50% more noise in the quietness scale.) This makes the SHEM3AY55N an ideal choice for people on a super-strict budget or for contractors and house flippers.

The one complaint we get from our customers is the drying performance when washing plastics. Condensation drying ensures that plastics don’t melt, but expect to see drops of water around the Tupperware.

Models:

  • SHEM3AY55N with recessed handle and front controls
  • SHXM4AY55N with towel-bar handle and top controls (SHXM4AY56N in black)
  • SHVM4AYB3N with panel-ready door and top controls
Bosch SHE3AR75UC

The Difference Between Ascenta and 100 Series

A quick note on this topic, as I’ve seen many people (including my own staff!) getting confused: The 100 Series was intended to replace the ultra-popular Bosch Ascenta in 2019, when Bosch introduced its new direct current brushless motor technology. (Translation: No alternating current, no friction for quiet operation. Energy efficient, more reliable (i.e. fewer service calls). Adjustable water pressure in the spray arms to fine-tune the clean based on the program selected (i.e. more water pressure for heavily soiled dishes.)

However, the pandemic upended Bosch’s plans. Even as the company trimmed its dishwasher catalog, in order to keep up with rising demand, it kept producing one Ascenta dishwasher, the SHE3AR75UC.

As of 2023, the specifications of the Ascenta SHE3AR75UC and the 100 Series SHEM3AY55N are exactly the same (with some slight semantic differences on program names). I reached out to Bosch to find out if they use the old motor on the Ascenta. I will update the article once I hear back.

Distinguishing Features:

  • Drying System: PureDry Condensation
  • 3rd Rack: On select models only
  • EasyGlide Racks: No
  • Adjustable Racks: Manual
  • Control Panel: Push button
  • Speed60 Express Wash: On select models
  • Water Softener: No
  • InfoLight Beam: Yes
  • Leak Protection: Yes
  • Place Settings: 14-15
  • Color Options: Stainless steel (select models in white or panel-ready)
  • Door Style: Bar handle, recessed handle

Our Ratings for 100 Series:

  • Reliability Better

One-year parts and labor warranty. The product is made to last. The company has an extensive service network.

  • Loading Good

All models come with a removable silverware basket. Select dishwashers include a third rack for your silverware. Racks are not easily adjustable for odd size dishes.

  • Washing Best

Soil sensors (aka Sensor Wash) adjust the wash time to match how dirty your dishes are, so you don’t waste time, water or energy. Bosch’s one-hour Speed60 cycle also actually gets a full load clean.

  • Drying Good

Dries dishes in an effective and energy-efficient manner. Will not melt your plastics but you need to make sure to use rinse aid for proper drying.

  • Noise Good

It’s 48-50 dB—not the most silent. Compared to other brands like Whirlpool or Frigidaire (at this price point), the Bosch 100 series is far more quiet.

  • Build Good

It has stainless-steel walls. The plastic base helps Bosch keep the cost down and pass the savings to you.

2. The Bosch 300 Series Dishwasher

Door styles of Bosch 300 series dishwashers.
Upgrades Over the 100 Series:

  • Speed60 express wash provides effective clean as your default program.
  • Best in class leak detection system.
  • Better use of interior space. (Adjustable rack, more room for dishes)
Potential Trade-offs

  • Same drying performance as the 100 series.
  • Interior racks are improved marginally.
Bosch SHEM63W55N

The Bosch 300 Series Dishwasher SHEM63W55N

The Bosch 300 series packs dramatic improvements over Ascenta or 100 series. As an example, the SHEM63W55N represents the flagship design style. Its all stainless steel interior is elegant and helps with drying.

The 44 db quietness is ideal for most families. You will practically not hear it running. Bosch was able to squeeze more place settings into the tub thanks to a more flexible tine arrangement and the standard third rack. (Don't worry, there is also a removable silverware basket for the die-hard fans.)

If drying is your pet peeve, be sure to check out the 500 or the 800 series models for best-in-the-industry drying performance.

Bosch Dishwasher SHPM65Z55N

The Best Overall Bosch Dishwasher: 500 Series SHPM65Z55N

The Bosch 500 Series SHPM65Z55N dishwasher has been a true hit for Bosch. It features a timeless pocket handle design, which fits any kitchen style. This style was so successful that other major brands came up with their copy-cat products (albeit after a major delay.)

The "Auto Air Dry" is my favorite feature. This dishwasher will open its door once the cycle is over to eliminate any lingering moisture. Given the modest price increase over the 300 series, the SHPM65Z55N is ideal for most people.

Please note that Bosch is experiencing significant delays in their 500 Series lineup. Consider an upgrade to the 800 Series if you need a fast turnaround.

Our Ratings for 500 Series:

Bosch Dishwasher SHX78B75UC

Special Edition Bosch 800 Series Dishwasher SHX78B75UC

Bosch makes the most sought-after dishwashers in the US. In order to help with product availability, the company imported its best-selling high-end European dishwasher, the SHX78B75UC, in late 2023.

This model slightly deviates from the US-manufactured models with a few upgrades. You will notice that wifi is standard on this model via the Bosch Home Connect app. Also, the water softener is a major help for people who live in areas with hard water (such as parts of New Jersey). Basically, the water softener will help eliminate unwanted watermarks on your dishes.

As the founder of an appliance store, I’ve helped many people choose their appliances. Here, you’ll find my recommendations, along with a logical approach to identifying the best dishwasher for you.

⭐ I'm an Expert

I've helped thousands of people pick out a great dishwasher—and taken the heat when it doesn’t work out.

🎁 I Know What's New and Great

I know what's new, what's available-and what's worth getting excited about.

⚖️ I'm Biased (in a Good Way)

👓 I'm a Dishwasher Nerd

Bosch Dishwasher Design Styles

Bosch dishwashers come in 5 primary design styles across all series:

  • Pocket Handle: The control panel's hidden from view on the top of the machine, and there's a reach-in handle on the front. This is the popular Bosch dishwasher design.
  • Recessed Handle: There's a visible control panel with a reach-in handle.
  • Towel Bar Handle: The controls are hidden at the top of the door, and there's a towel-bar style handle on the front.
  • Scoop Handle: This style has hidden controls and a small, elegant reach-in handle.
  • Custom Panel: The controls are hidden, and the door can accept custom cabinet panels to match surrounding kitchen décor (not shown below).

Bosch dishwashers are extremely quiet—so much so that they beam a light onto the floor to tell you that they're running. (Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to tell.) Bosch calls this feature the infolight or time light, depending on the series. Infolight is standard on all Bosch dishwashers with hidden controls. Time light is reserved for luxury models, and its beam includes a time-remaining "light stamp."

Bosch Benchmark Series Dishwasher w/Panel Ready Door: SHV89PW73N

Bosch Benchmark Dishwasher SHV89PW73N

Why We Like It:

  • Feature-rich.
  • The quietest dishwasher, at 40 dB.
  • Panel-ready design lets you customize its look.
  • Wi-Fi-enabled HomeConnect app is great for those who want the latest technology.
  • Water softener gives you spotless results and extends the life of your dishwasher. This is great for New Jersey, where we have hard water.
  • MyWay rack can fit more than silverware.
  • Dimming interior lights add a touch of elegance, and look especially impressive at night.

The Bosch Benchmark series is ideal for people seeking the quietest dishwasher with the absolute best cleaning performance. For example, the Bosch Benchmark SHE89PW75N and SHX89PW75N are the quietest Bosch dishwashers on the market at 38 dB rating.

The Bosch Benchmark series also offers the best cleaning performance. We also like their conveniences, such as the interior lights and easy gliding racks.

The SHV89PW73N stands out as a shallow depth dishwasher with a panel-ready finish that lets you integrate it into your cabinets.

Bosch 800 Series ADA Dishwasher SGX78B55UC

Bosch SGX78B55UC

Quietness: 44 dB | Interior: Stainless Steel | 3rd Rack: Yes | Place Settings: 15

The most important and unique advantage of the Bosch SGX78B55UC is its water softener feature, which is a must if you live in an area with hard water. It ensures that you’ll never be left with those annoying watermarks on your glasses again. Most important, Bosch makes this critical feature available at a very reasonable price point.

Having said that, most people choose the Bosch SGX68U55UC due to its shorter height, which makes it ideal for kitchens that have raised floors or counters at a non-standard height. Only a handful of manufacturers make ADA dishwashers, and Bosch is by far the most prominent.

This 800 Series dishwasher comes with all the key features found on the rest of the lineup. However, Bosch did not include the AutoAir and CrystalDry options on these special application dishwashers.

However, the SGX78B55UC still comes with an all stainless-steel tub and an ultra-quiet 44 dB noise level. In fact, it’s so quiet that most people don’t even realize it’s on. But not to worry—Bosch’s signature Infolight beams to the floor to indicate operation.

With this model, you’ll also enjoy the convenience of a third rack for silverware as well as added rack flexibilities throughout the machine.

The only complaint we’ve heard from customers about this model is that their dishes aren’t always completely dry at the end of the cycle. However, we expect the CrystalDry option to become available on standard 800 Series machines soon.

Our Dishwasher Rating Criteria

I've had countless dishwashers in my home over my 15 years in this business and heard thousands of customers’ reviews–in real time! My first question my staff and I ask people who walk into our store is always: What do you not like about the dishwasher you have now?

We've developed these six criteria based on that institutional knowledge. We rate each dishwasher Good, Better, or Best compared with the rest of its manufacturer’s lineup and the competition. Here’s what that means to us:

Washing
  • Basic wash cycles (normal; heavy; pots and pans; rinse), standard spray arms.
  • More advanced wash cycles, such as steam/sanitize, an hour-or-less quick wash, and a sensor wash that adjusts the cycle time based on the soil level.
  • Additional or specially designed spray arms, designated water jets or wash zones for bottles or utensils, high-end delicate or china wash cycles, built-in water softener.
Drying
  • Basic condensation drying or heated drying with fan assist.
  • Condensation drying with auto-open door.
  • Condensation drying with mineral assist or a gentle final heat cycle.
Loading
  • Two or three racks, ideally including a third row top rack for utensils and small bowls.
  • Three racks; some racks’ height can be adjusted or tines repositioned; wine glass and bottle fasteners.
  • Three smooth-gliding racks with adjustable levels and movable tines; additional wine glass holders or bottle fasteners.
Build
  • Plastic tub, tubular handles, front control panel, regular stainless-steel or black or white plastic front.
  • Stainless-steel tub, sleek or pocket handle (or panel ready option), hidden top display, fingerprint-resistant stainless steel or panel-ready front.
  • Stainless-steel tub; sleek pocket handle or pro-style handle.
Noise
  • 46 to 50 decibels (dB)
  • 40 to 45 decibels (dB)
  • Under 40 decibels (dB)
Brand Reliability
  • Expected to last between five and seven years.
  • Expected to last around 10 years.
  • Expected to last 20-plus years.

Dishwashers in the News

This section is regularly updated by our staff to include the latest industry news surrounding dishwashers.

It's no secret that everyone loves a quiet dishwasher. To make their dishwasher models so silent, many manufacturers have slowed cycle times to last about two to three hours. In order to conserve energy in the process, the manufacturers also began filtering the dirty water inside the dishwasher instead of wasting ample amounts of fresh water. This is how they've achieved both silent operation and energy efficiency.

Because the cycles became so long, many people found shortcuts by washing their dishes by hand, using cycles that bypass the energy-saving "normal" cycle, or running the dishwasher multiple times on the express cycle. However, this change in lifestyle ended up causing just as much water and energy usage.

To remedy this issue, the Department of Energy (DOE) released legislation stating that manufacturers must include a "normal" wash cycle that can wrap up cleaning and drying in under an hour. This cycle will use a sufficient amount of water and energy to give your dishes a full and complete clean.

Bosch has since embraced this legislation. Although Bosch dishwashers already had an express cycle, most users selected the "normal" cycle out of habit. Additionally, the express cycle was less than ideal for cleaning heavily soiled items. Because most people chose to use the normal cycle, Bosch got a bad rep for long wash times. However, this legislation has given Bosch the opportunity to make the normal cycle faster without compromising on performance.

In addition to energy and water efficiency regulations, dishwasher manufacturers can also apply for a sanitation certification from the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). In order to receive a NSF/ANSI Standard 184 Certification, the sanitizing cycle on residential dishwashers "must achieve a minimum 99.999 percent or 5-log reduction of bacteria” and “reach a final rinse temperature of 150 degrees F." This certification is increasingly important in today’s world, and is especially important for parents of young children who are often tasked with cleaning bottles and need an extra-hot wash. All Bosch dishwashers have PureDry, a setting that features a sanitize option heating the water to 162 degrees F at the end.

Conclusion

Bosch offers different dishwasher styles and a rich feature set to fit any budget. While the 100 and 300 Series dishwashers are ideal for those who are price conscious, the 500 Series and especially the Bosch 800 Series dishwashers will give you a high-quality clean and a number of design choices. Also, Bosch has many options for special applications, such as shorter height ADA units, a water softener for areas with hard water, and 18-inch slim products.

FAQs

I have an old Bosch dishwasher (earlier than 2019). What are the current upgrades?

  1. CrystalDry: Gives you the best drying performance. Reserved for 800 series and Benchmark dishwashers.
  2. AutoAir Dry: Opens the door and leaves it ajar to let moisture escape and enhance drying. Found on 500 series.
  3. MyWay Rack: Bosch transformed the third rack for silverware to accommodate items such as ramekins and large utensils. It calls this feature the MyWay Rack, and it’s found on select models.
  4. EasyGlide Racks: Smooth gliding racks with ball-bearing wheels to make loading and unloading incredibly easy
  5. Adjustable Upper Rack: Available on Bosch 300 series and up
  6. Speed60: This express wash, which finishes in under 60 minutes, is now standard on almost all Bosch dishwashers.
  7. Major sound-insulating improvements
  8. Internet connectivity on models with HomeConnect

Does Bosch make other appliances?

Yes, Bosch manufactures a full set of home appliances. We typically specify Bosch appliances to those customers who target modern features, reliable performance, and a timeless look without spending a fortune.

Bosch refrigerators and washer dryers consistently get great reviews. We also feature their wall ovens as a highly rated appliance. You can see our in-depth write-ups on these products in the links we provided above.

Bosch is part of the BSH group, which owns the Thermador brand known for its residential luxury pro cooking products.

Which Bosch dishwashers dry the best?

Bosch dishwashers with CrystalDry have the best drying performance in the industry. CrystalDry takes the internal temperature to 176 degrees F (a whopping 14 degree increase over the previous ExtraDry feature, and all without additional energy consumption). CrystalDry even outperforms dishwashers with heating elements, and it won't melt your plastics. Bosch offers CrystalDry in its 800 Series and Benchmark dishwashers.

AutoAir dry is another technology that Bosch employs in its 500 Series dishwasher. We like this feature because it opens the dishwasher door and leaves it ajar after the cycle finishes to let fresh air in. If you usually do your dishes at night, you will be guaranteed a batch of clean, dry dishes in the morning.

Lower-tier Bosch dishwashers, including the 100 and 300 series, come with the Extra Dry cycle. This cycle uses slightly higher temperature water in the final rinse to boost condensation drying action.

What is the difference between the Bosch 300 and 500 Series dishwashers?

Bosch 300 series dishwashers are quiet at 44 dB—so much so that Bosch projects a discreet red light beam onto the floor to let you know it's running. The 300 series is where Bosch starts offering an all-stainless steel interior and a flexible third rack. You'll find multiple design types in the 300 series to match your style.
