Refrigerators questions

What's the best refrigerator brand to buy?

Answered by John Carey

LG and Samsung are the most innovative refrigerator brands. If you want a smart fridge with internal cameras, a glass door that stays dark but illuminates with a gentle knock, you have found your match. GE, on the other hand, makes the most reliable refrigerators on the market. Profile and Cafe even pack a Keurig coffee maker and a hot water dispenser to their doors. Whirlpool and Frigidaire make the most budget-friendly fridges. Sub Zero is still the gold standard when it comes to longevity, luxury, and unmatched customer service. We cover all of these brands and more in our in-depth guides.

How long do refrigerators last?

Answered by Metin Ozkuzey

Modern refrigerators come with many nifty features from door-in-door design to wifi connectivity with cameras. Compared to fridges from 10+ years ago, better energy consumption defines today's products. Microprocessor driven air and humidity controls along with efficient compressors help with food preservation. We estimate the life expectancy of a new fridge to be around 7-10 years.

There are still some brands on the marketplace, such as Sub-Zero, that strive for a 20+ year lifespan. However, keep in mind that ambient temperature conditions and basic maintenance will affect the longevity of your fridge. Here, we would like to give you some tips on how to make the most of your investment.

Have you ever wondered why most refrigerator problems occur in the summer? That is because your refrigerator needs to fight ambient hot and humid conditions. Therefore, make sure to keep your AC on at a maintenance level temperature even when you are not at home.

Do not wait to call service if you have a noisy refrigerator or if you notice your ice cream is always soft in the freezer. Waiting will only get you a bigger service bill.

Set the correct temperature in your fridge and freezer. Modern refrigerators are not like your fathers' old icebox. You can set a precise temperature and expect the fridge to manage around it. According to FDA, the refrigerator compartment needs to be under 40 F and the freezer under 4 F to initiate a sanitary environment. We recommend 35-38 F for the fridge and 0 F for the freezer. Make sure to check your user manual for model-specific temperature recommendations.

How can I make my refrigerator last longer?

Our service people carry a vacuum cleaner in their truck. This is because most performance problems occur due to the thick dust layer accumulated on the coils or around the compressor housing. If you have a top compressor built-in Sub-Zero fridge make sure to vacuum the top area once a year.

In the interior of the fridge you will find vents that circulate the cold air. Make sure your food items do not block these vents.

Clean food and beverage spills as soon as you can. In the same vein, please discard spoiled food items as soon as possible. Rotten food generates gasses that affect fresh produce or fruits.

Read your product manual to learn about manufacturers' suggestions on how best to store your food. As an example, we do not recommend that you mix vegetables (notably gree leaves) with fruits. You can learn more about the transfer of ethylene gas and which foods go together vs. not via a simple search on the internet.

Keep the rubber gaskets clean. Proper insulation helps retain the cold air and prevents your fridge from overworking.

Following these simple tips, you will not only add to the lifespan of your fridge but experience it troublefree over years to come.

What is a counter depth refrigerator?

Answered by Metin Ozkuzey

President of Designer Appliances

A counter-depth refrigerator aligns with the regular depth of kitchen cabinets. These refrigerators are 3 to 4 inches shallower than a standard refrigerator, however, their design still provides 21 and 24 cubic feet capacity for cold food storage in a 36-inch wide by 70-inch tall setting (ideal size for a suburban familiy). More counter depth vs standard refrigerator on our detailed review with a visual guide. Most people choose a counter-depth refrigerator as an affordable alternative to a built-in fridge to save money.
