Are washer and dryers stackable?

Answered by John Carey

Do you want to save some space by stacking your washer and dryer?

Most front load washer and dryers can be stacked safely since, for the most part, manufacturers mastered anti-vibration technology. However, don't assume your washer and dryer are stackable. In order to stack a washer and dryer, they first have to be compatible. You can check this quickly in the specifications document of your washing machines and dryers. Just as a friendly reminder, the dryer goes on top of the washer and not the other way around.

Most washer and dryers do not come with a stacking kit. Therefore, you would need to purchase the compatible part. This stacking kit ensures that the two machines are stable and safely secured together.

You should never try to stack your washer and dryer without a stacking kit. Even minimal vibrations can cause one of the machines to shift, which could cause the top machine to fall off and damage itself, your home, and potentially you or a family member.

Where is the best place to buy a washer and dryer?

So, you are now in the market for a new washer and dryer. But where is the best place to buy one?

There are multiple places you can buy a washer and dryer, such as your local appliance store, a big box chain, or an online store like Amazon.

Local Stores

Local stores have the advantage of great personal service. They are also better suited to handle exceptions and have, in general, better installers on their staff. For example, let’s say a rusty valve is found when your washer is being installed. The local store installers are able to change it for a nominal fee while the big box stores won’t even offer this service.

You do need to be aware though that some salespeople at the local stores get direct incentives from manufactures (At Designer Appliances we do not allow this practice.); therefore, the advice you are getting might be biased. It is always a good idea to do your research online beforehand to cut through any potential bias.

Local stores are also not usually organized well enough to handle a large volume of orders. Make sure you call the store the day before delivery or the morning of to remind them about your delivery/install and time window.

Big Box Stores

Big box stores offer the advantage of a large selection. If you are looking to browse multiple brands and styles, shopping at a big box store allows you to view a variety of options all at once. Big box stores also tend to be more organized than local stores and can ensure your delivery is on time.

With a big box store, you, unfortunately, do not get the personal service like you would from a local store. Big box stores are also designed for volume and no exceptions, so they are not able to handle any extra work that may come up. Due to the fact that these big box stores are dealing with this high volume of clients, if you have an issue, it might take a while until you get a resolution.

Online Stores

Online stores offer you two advantages: selection and ease of ordering. An online store seemingly has an unlimited number of styles and options for you to choose from. You also can take your time browsing while you are in the comfort of your own home, so there is no pressure to rush and choose something.

There are some negatives to online stores though. When you order online, you do not know who is going to show up to your house to install your appliance. You also have to deal with the possibility of shipping damages, which can be a huge issue.

In our opinion, it is best to purchase your washer and dryer from a local store that also has an online presence. This way you get the best of both worlds.

When is the best time to buy a washer and dryer?

Answered by John Carey

Is there a right time of the year to buy a washer and dryer that can save me money? Actually, the answer is yes.

There are two important sales events when it comes to buying a washer and dryer, Black Friday and the 4th of July.

You may be asking if you need to make a purchase exactly on those 2 dates. Luckily, the answer is no. Major appliance manufacturers start the sale pricing about 21-28 days before those holidays, and the sales run 7-14 days after the holidays are over.

You will also find great deals somewhere in the window of 21 days before to 7 days after any regular promotional holidays or minor holidays like Labor Day or President’s Day.

But what about other discounts? Discounts on washers and dryers revolve around reduced prices during sales events, and generous rebate offers. In addition, don’t forget to check out your local energy company rebates because these can save you some extra money. For example, New Jersey offers a $300 energy rebate when you purchase a Miele dryer, and this makes a huge difference for most budgets.
